Program Highlights

In class, students learn to communicate in Spanish the statements, words, and expressions most commonly needed in order to carry out daily job responsibilities.

The grammatical content of the course is taught in the context of the vocabulary words and expressions that are most frequently used in the student's area of employment. Grammar and vocabulary is reinforced with dialogues, readings, videos, and role plays, always within the realm of public safety and the student's specific job responsibilities.

For example:

During the first week, a beginning student learns how to answer basic questions and give and receive basic information in Spanish:

  • What is the victim's name?
  • How old is s/he?
  • Where does the suspect live?
  • Where does the defendant work?
  • What do you do for a living?

In addition, the student will be able to express in a basic form the past, present, and future tenses:

  • The defendant spoke with his lawyer.
  • The judge is going to decide if she is guilty or not.

Furthermore, the student learns basic vocabulary including places, colors, personal objects, clothes, establishments, and some adverbs and expressions of time.

  • The suspect is in…
  • The thief's shirt is blue.
  • Where is the victim's family?
  • She saw the suspect last week.

As previously mentioned, the course is for students of all Spanish levels; on the first day of class students are tested to determine skill level and courses start at the appropriate point.
